WEEK 9: Chicago Rush (5-2) @ Tulsa Talons (2-5)

TULSA, OK (May 7, 2011) – The Chicago Rush (5-3) were unable to overcome seven costly turnovers as the Rush fell to the Tulsa Talons (3-5) on Saturday night at the BOK Center.

Rush FB Marcus Waugh began the first quarter with a 2-yard run for his second touchdown of the season. The Rush scoring continued when DB Jason Simpson recorded a 9-yard interception return for a touchdown. Talons’ QB Matt Bassuener also struck early with a 1-yard touchdown run. Bassuener was dominant throughout the game scoring seven total touchdowns including four via the run.

Despite DE Quartez Vickerson’s sixth sack of the season the Rush defense was unable to stop the Talons from tacking on a 27-yard field goal to end the first quarter.

The second quarter began with a blocked Rush field goal attempt, which Bassuener quickly capitalized on with a 34-yard touchdown pass to WR Troy McBroom. As the quarter progressed the Talons defense forced two Rush fumbles which contributed to the Talons 27-0 scoring run, before QB Russ Michna connected with WR Reggie Gray for a 43-yard touchdown reception. Michna was 17 for 26 with 248 yards and three touchdowns in the game.

DB Vic Hall tallied two interceptions within a minute of each other in the second quarter, ultimately leading to a 24-yard touchdown pass to Rush WR Charles Dillon. The Talons answered with a nine second touchdown drive to end the half with a 34-28 lead.

The Talons offense got off to a quick start in the third quarter, scoring on a 8-yard run by Bassuener. Tulsa was strong on both sides of the ball as Talons’ DE Victor Degrate sacked Michna for a 14-yard loss and forced the Rush to turn the ball over on downs and holding the Rush to just one touchdown in the quarter.

A 7-yard touchdown reception by Gray and a safety from Vickerson capped off the Rush scoring in the fourth quarter. Gray was again Chicago’s leading receiver with seven receptions for 142 yards and three touchdowns. The defeat was Chicago’s worst loss of the season.

The Rush will travel to Arizona next week to battle the Arizona Rattlers (6-1) next Saturday, May 14th at 9 p.m. CST.
